The next Mazda MX-5 will be back to basics of a proper sports roadster, which means even more simplification, even more lightness.

The simplification will even affect the styling, as according to the sources the new model will get a very ordinary oval front grille, instead of the love or hate smiley face. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to get boring. There will be exquisite designer touches to make it interesting.

Thanks to a range of new Skyactiv technologies, the new MX-5 will be more efficient than ever. It will be incredibly light at around 2100 pounds. That means Mazda can go ahead and proceed with the downsizing of their powertrains. The car will reportedly get 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine in its base model, which only makes 125 hp, but manages 50+ mpg.

The American Miata will get a 2.0-liter engine, but instead of 160 hp, it will have to make do with 145.

The new generation Mazda MX-5 will hit the market in fall 2013.
