Peugeot’s enormous success at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb event in Colorado is not an occasion the car maker is going to forget about in a hurry. Their triumphant return to Pikes Peak and then crushing all the records with the superb 208 Pikes Peak is now going to inspire a special model: the Peugeot 208 GTi Pikes Peak Edition.
Cashing on the checks Sebastian Loeb wrote with the one-off Peugeot 208 T16 race car, the 2018 GTi Pikes Peak will get more power than the standard GTi; it’ll be considerably faster; and it will get some visual upgrades as well, at least a couple of commemorative badges.
The standard GTi is powered by a 1.6-litre THP 200bhp petrol engine with maximum torque of 275Nm. You can expect the Peugeot 208 GTi Pikes Peak Edition to extract another 20 to 30 horsepower from the same unit. The normal model gos from 0 to 62mph in under 7.0 seconds. The Pikes Peak will shave a couple of milliseconds off of that, and enables the car to go beyond 140 mph flat out.
Another area the Peugeot 208 GTi Pikes Peak will best its normal counterpart will be the standard features and equipment. Although, we would like it more if Peugeot went the other way, stripping as much weight as they can off of the GTi’s 1160kg bulk, making the car a lot faster and exciting.
