Opel/Vauxhall announced the launch of new versions of the Astra hatchback and Sports Tourer powered by a super smooth new diesel engine. It is the same 1.6 CDTi engine found in the Zafira Tourer and the Meriva, available in two power outputs for the Astra.
Dubbed the ‘whisper diesel’ for its high levels of refinement and smoothness, this engine can be had in the Astra with 110 or 136 PS. The former does 76.3mpg combined with CO2 emission of just 97g/km, and the latter manages 72.4mpg combined and 104g/km.
The best thing about the Opel/Vauxhall Astra fitted with the new diesel engine is that it’s one of the best in its class for noise and vibration. The car owes this refinement to an efficient combustion process with multiple injection, re-designed components and the use of acoustic covers. The powertrain also features a variable turbine turbocharger, high-pressure common rail injection system and lean NOx trap exhaust-after treatment (LNT).
Opel/Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Diesel comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox a revised gear change and improved shift quality. The car goes on sale in April following a stop at the Geneva Motor Show.
