Next-Gen Corvette Could Go Hybrid

The current Corvette Stingray C7 is almost entirely new from the ground up, so you would think that it is going to stay in production like this for decades. Not So. As it turned out, Chevy has some drastic plans for the next-gen Corvette, and one of them includes switching to a hybrid powertrain.

The new LT1 V8 Chevrolet developed for the Stingray seems to be having very limited use, as it’s not even going into the new Z06. That car gets its own supercharged unit. And if the plans for a hybrid ‘Vette lead to somewhere, there will be no use for it in the C8, either.

More and more car makers are switching to electric boost these days, not just because of the efficiency that such systems brings to the table, but to achieve their horsepower targets. Coupling a small electric motor to a medium-sized petrol engine solves many issues regarding fuel economy and emissions, and it delivers pretty good performance. So it’s kind of a win-win deal.

All that said, the next-gen Corvette C8 is still a long way away and hybrid technology may evolve into something totally different until then.
