It was back in 2010 and the rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe that Hyundai realized they are capable of making fun cars, and they have been working on it ever since. Every once in a while they experiment with a new idea, with the latest being this mid-engined Veloster-based concept called Hyundai RM15.

Unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show 2015, Hyundai RM15 Concept is a powerful fun machine with an affinity for drifting, boasting a 2.0 liter T-GDI mid-mounted engine generating 300 hp and 383 Nm of torque. Before we get further into the details, check out the car in action and listen to its sweet sound:

Hyundai RM15 Concept, in which RM stands for Racing Midship, features carbon fiber body panels, a WRC-inspired roll-cage add extra stiffness to the structure, aluminum double-wishbone suspension and 19-inch monoblock wheels with 235/35 R19 tires (front) and 265/35 R19 tires (rear).

The RM15 is not the first hot hatch with the engine in the back, in fact this species dates back to the age of Renault 5. But it is one of the most well-thought-out versions featuring specifically designed aerodynamics and cooling system. The lowered ride height combined with the new aero parts give the car super car-rivaling aero efficiency with downforce of 24kg at 200kph, aided by a competitive lift-coefficient.

Hyundai says RM15 shows where the firm’s performance car development is headed. But don’t hold your breath to see one of these on the road any time soon.
