Mazda is yet to reveal the technical specifications of the new MX-5 roadster, and the word is they are not going to do so until on the eve of Paris Motor Show. But the internet cannot wait that long. Or rather, it doesn’t have to. Some leaked intel has already revealed the most important figures.

According to these reports, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 weighs no more than 1,020 kilograms. That’s a big relief, because traditionally, and due to the constantly changing safety rules and technology features, a new model is always considerably heavier than the one it replaces.

That is not the case for the new MX-5, at least the base model. If this information is correct, the engineers have somehow managed to shave 100 kg of the car’s curb weight while complying with the all the regulations and safety concerns. Low weight is of utmost importance in a sports car, and it’s great news that in this aspect Mazda MX-5 is going to be more than satisfying.

What’s not very satisfying is the power out of new 1.5 liter SKYACTIV engine that powers the entry-level MX-5, which is said to around 130 horsepower. But hey, the car weighs next to nothing, so the performance should be decent. And anyway, it’s not like this is the only engine on offer. Mazda will indeed offer bigger, more powerful engines for the Miata.
